Video Summary
In a recent webinar organized by AAA, Kathy Scott and Pam Thompson discussed creating inclusive learning environments for neurodivergent students. Neurodiversity recognizes and celebrates neurological differences, with neurodivergent (ND) individuals requiring tailored educational approaches. The presentation highlighted that ND students face significant misconceptions, often portrayed inaccurately in media, and experience systemic barriers, including late or non-diagnosis, especially in minority communities, due to lack of resources or societal biases.

Scott and Thompson emphasized that traditional reliance on university disability services often falls short, as those services may not fully accommodate ND students' diverse needs. Many ND students are hesitant to disclose their status due to past social stigmas and fears of isolation.

Effective teaching practices for ND students involve more diverse instructional strategies, including varied forms of engagement and multiple learning resources. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can play a crucial role, providing a more enabling environment that benefits all students by offering various methods of content representation, expression, and engagement.

Additionally, Scott and Thompson recommended rethinking syllabus policies to support attendance and grading inclusiveness and incorporating adaptive classroom strategies. They stressed that all students, including ND students, need to be prepared for a diverse workplace, with certain companies now actively seeking neurodivergent employees for their unique skill sets.

The session concluded with a Q&A, addressing balancing ND needs with those of neurotypical students and strategically organizing group projects to leverage individual strengths without necessitating disclosure of ND status. The AAA plans to release a series of videos to further aid educators in creating inclusive classrooms.
